Self-similar jet breakup for a generalized PTT model

We discuss self-similar solutions for jet breakup for a family of models of nonNewtonian fluids which includes the Phan-Thien Tanner model. The constitutive law is given by Tt + (v · ∇)T− (∇v)T−T(∇v)T + κT +ν(trT)a−1T = μ(∇v + (∇v)T ), (1) where a > 1. For a = 2, a recent paper establishes the existence of a similarity solution for surface tension driven jet breakup. In this paper, we show that...

Repeated formation of fluid threads in breakup of a surfactant-covered jet.

Breakup of thin threads is widely observed in nature and technology. As a surfactant-covered liquid jet approaches breakup, its profile consists of a periodic pattern of drops connected by thin threads. Near the locations where the threads join the drops, simulations show that a series of thinner threads arise as the jet breaks. That threads can continue to form repeatedly without addition of n...

Dynamics of Bead Formation, Filament Thinning, and Breakup in Weakly Viscoelastic Jets

The spatiotemporal evolution of a viscoelastic jet depends on the relative magnitude of capillary, viscous, inertial and elastic stresses. The interplay of capillary and elastic stresses leads to formation of very thin and stable filaments between drops, or to ‘beadson-a-string’ structure. We show that by understanding the physical processes that control different stages of the jet evolution it...

Dynamics of liquid nanojets.

We study the breakup of a liquid jet a few nanometers in diameter, based on a stochastic differential equation derived recently by Moseler and Landman [Science 289, 1165 (2000)]. In agreement with their simulations, we confirm that noise qualitatively changes the characteristics of breakup, leading to symmetric profiles. Using the path integral description, we find a self-similar profile that d...

On the breakup of viscous liquid threads

A one-dimensional model evolution equation is used to describe the nonlinear dynamics that can lead to the breakup of a cylindrical thread of Newtonian uid when capillary forces drive the motion. The model is derived from the Stokes equations by use of rational asymptotic expansions and under a slender jet approximation. The equations are solved numerically and the jet radius is found to vanish...
